749R in Paddock
In depth
History: 10/30/08
Purchased from LM cycles as a race bike by the previous owner. He rode it for almost two years and had to retire. I purchased it as an un-registered race bike and am continuing to modify it.

Bike was dismantled in December 2009 and sold as parts after a failed attempt to build for the 2010 race season. After one year of racing, she needed a lot of motor work, much of which was out of our budget. Sadly, this 749R is no longer and its a stark reminder, these bikes don't last long and are extremely, overly burdened with expensive motor parts which only Ducati has and are always on backorder.

Problems: Voltage regulator failed mid season (3500 miles roughly)
Taper collets failed (5800 miles)
Rod bearings failed (5800 miles)
Crank bearings failed (5800 miles)
Major piston blow-by, which caused oil to spew out of every hole on the bike
Pistons were both toast, so were the cylinders which were scored (5800 miles)
Suspension issues continued throughout the season, all caused by the extremely stiff rear shock AND 16.5" tires screwing up the trail.

Comments: Bike survived over 5800 miles of race abuse over the course of a racing season. Its by far the best motorcycle I've ever ridden. The stability of this machine is top notch, though the 16.5" tires were a poor choice as the bike was never setup for the difference in trail that they caused until the final race weekend and by then, it was too late. Even after putting in a fancier shock, the bike still had issues until I re-worked the entire geometry setup. Once the geometry was changed, the bike seemed to work better and at the very end, it worked well. It stayed an 750cc machine, it was never converted.
